The EPCI reveals data on more than 50 indicators voluntarily provided by the companies which allows for the evaluation of a company´s environmental policies, commitments and environmental performance in the production of newsprint, graphic paper, tissue, packaging and pulp products. Read the EPCI 2019 press release The EPCI 2019 participants together produce: 16% of world's GRAPHIC PAPER 13% of world's NEWSPRINT 9% of world's PACKAGING 10% of world's PULP 15% of world's TISSUE The Index scores a company’s overall performance on responsible fibre sourcing, clean manufacturing, transparency in reporting and environmental management systems (EMS). It aims to show a trend over the years for the various indicators evaluated without comparing individual company performance. 2020 is the deadline set by more than 500 global companies for fulfilling their pledge to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains. As such, EPCI 2019 will allow companies to transparently report on their footprint as part of their commitments to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development , the Bonn Challenge and New York Declaration on Forests , among others. This year 28 companies accepted the invitation to take part in the Index, while 56 did not respond or declined to participate. Also, this year WWF carried out a special assessment of 3 companies which did not choose to voluntarily participate, using publicly available data. Participating Companies Declining Companies View the Special Assessment Mondi has participated in the Environmental Paper Company Index since it was launched in 2013. We believe it provides a valuable benchmark of our performance and drives transparency in the packaging and paper sector, which is crucial to build trust with customers and other key stakeholders. Production forests need to be managed to the highest ecological and social standards, and the use and recovery of wood products must become more efficient. WWF considers the pulp, paper, and packaging sector a crucial player to help achieve WWF's goals which are to increase protected forest areas, bring more forests under improved management, halt deforestation and restore degraded forest landscapes. We call on the sector to take bold and collective action to reduce its global footprint and transparently disclose information on its activities and policies. Even though some evidence is required and plausibility checks are made, WWF is not auditing this information and relies on accurate data being provided by transparent producers. Therefore, WWF cannot warrant that the information presented in this rating is complete, accurate or up to date. Furthermore, WWF does not accept liability for any claims or loss or damage relating to the information contained in this document or shown on the EPCI website, including (but not limited to) for lost earnings, exemplary damages, consequential damage or claims based on negligence. WWF ensures its objective assessment of all participating companies through the use of a stringent and clear methodology and the application of monitoring processes. The EPCI communication code requires companies to clear any communication about their participation with WWF in advance. Without prior written permission from WWF, the companies are not allowed to publish their participation in this rating. The rating on WWF EPCI is not providing a guarantee of legality as required by the Lacey Act or the EU Timber Regulation. WWF reserves the right to exclude companies from participating in the EPCI at any time in the process, according to WWF’s own judgement. WWF has the right to do this without limitations, for example if a company makes wrong data claims or provides misleading information; if the company is disassociated from FSC according to the FSC policy of association; if the company violates or is suspected violating the EPCI communication code; if a company defames WWF or its allies/partners or other participating companies publicly, voices threats or tries to force behaviours; if a company shows other behaviours that make a cooperation or a participation of the company in the Index unacceptable (e.g. suspicion of human rights violation or violation of the law) or has negative consequences on the proper functioning of the Index.
